Saw a Kizashi in the wild for the first time the other day. A good looking car for what it is. That color is a little boring, but still. Nice to know someone bought one of these.

A neighbor has one, it’s in black, I want it

I have one like that in Gunmetal Gray - 2012 Kizzy - That’s the wife’s DD - so far a champ, thirsty engine (thank the AWD) but 180HP is well used and the paddles do help you get around the CVT’s weakness in early acceleration. Interior is great. Get the manual if you can w/o AWD.

Seriously? I see 2 or 3 of those a day.

I didn’t think it came with a manual.

Really? Where do you live? Maybe this was just the first one I noticed, but I definitely don’t come across them daily. And I see there’s like 2 for sale with 100 miles of me.

Not the AWD model, but the non-AWD’s can be had with a manual

Always appealed to me a lot. Can’t remember seeing one. Ever. They were supposed to be for sale over here but the only Suzukis really sold are the Alto and Vitara.

Yeah, they came here just as the brand left, so they’re few and far between. Seems like a nice package except for the CVT. 180 horsepower isn’t a lot, but I bet it’s enough to have fun. And it’s good looking. The interior is quite nice for what the price must have been.

Ah, Suzuki did a Daihatsu on the States? Too bad for you, they’ve got a great line-up of small oddities. Although nowadays the only oddball left is probably that Jimny . No, that’s spelled correctly.

That Swift is actually a good and fun car!

Yeah, Suzuki never had much of a dealer network here. We got the Samurai/Jimny back in the 80’s and they sold a bunch until there was a rollover scandal with them which actually turned out to be exaggerated. They never really recovered and finally gave up a year or so ago. And, no one seemed to take their cars seriously. Did you ever see my post about the Jimny’s predecessor?

I always liked the Swift. They were sold here as a “Geo” back in the day. I don’t know much about the newer ones.

Daihatsu actually sold quite some cars. We had the Scion Xb as a Daihatsu Materia. And the Cuore always sold good. I guess Louwman, the importer of both Toyota and Daihatsu, didn’t want to wait for the moment Daihatsu would stop exporting to Europe at all (which is gonna happen, maybe already I don’t know) so they stopped importing early 2013. The Japanese decision had to do with European demands concerning safety and environment that get harder to meet every year.

Yes, I’ve read the Hopestar piece. Love those things. That 3-wheel Hopestar sure looks like a Daihatsu Midget.

The swift GTI was epic. But not as epic as the Daihatsu Charade GT-ti we had over here. 3-cylinders. 12 valves. Turbo.

Yeah, I’ve always liked Daihatsu. I almost imported an early Daihatsu Fellow kei car once. It would’ve been the only one in America since nobody cares about them here. They briefly tried imported the Charade and the Rocky in the 90’s, but it was only a trial and it didn’t last. We didn’t get the GT-ti unfortunately. That thing looks sweet. We may have gotten a few Swift GTI’s, though. I can’t remember. I think they might have completely left Europe by now. Or they’re only in England, or something, where they don’t have to convert them to lhd.

Yeah, the Hopestar, Midget and Mazda K360 were all pretty much the same design.

Haha, this little Fellow?

Kinja'd!!!

Or some later Max Coupé? Love that rear window on the one above.

A friend of mine had a GT-ti in the ‘90’s. That car was truly epic. Nimble, powerful and those 3-cylinders always sound bad-ass.

Yup, that little guy. I love those tiny buttresses. They did have a cool little Fellow coupe that are really cheap if you find one. It’d have to be this color, though.

Kinja'd!!!

My favorite is the Fellow Buggy that we may have discussed before. They didn’t make too many of those.

Wow, that car makes an awesome noise. That thing must be a blast. I wish we got those. It might have given Daihatsu a chance. I guess they’re importable now, but I’d never get to pass California emissions.

Awesome! Both your Fellow and that orange one.

It may even pass California emissions: It’s only 993cc! How do I know this from memory? Daihatsu engineers for years claimed everywhere the optimal displacement per cylinder was 331cc. Guess what displacement that first 4-cylinder in the Charade had?

Haha. TRICK Question. Of course not. 1295 cc. And this one was JUST introduced after I read some article in which a Daihatsu engineer claimed that 331cc-fact to be true.

That’s funny. I guess they had to keep it under 1300cc for some reason. We only got the 3 cylinder ones, I think. I can’t imagine the oomph that extra piston must have applied.

Insurance, taxes, one of those reasons. That 1.3 was a blast. Light car. No GT-ti sensations but a very nice and nimble ride.

Kinja'd!!!1

I imagine it was totally pleasant. The Charade was an all time great crap-can. I bet that 1.3 was in the Rocky suv that we got. That was a cool little car, too and nice ones actually command a little premium because they're hard to find.

That Rocky actually was a capable off-roader. A college-buddy of mine drove a Rocky Diesel. Only failed on us once. Because the fuel-gauge was out. And we were out of diesel...
